I believe that one of the most imperative freedoms is the freedom to act the way you want to act and be who you want to be. Though this seems extremely obvious, it has been made clear through several of the readings that society as a whole seems to negate this freedom when it comes to “acting” or choosing a gender that may or may not correlate with your biological sex. In Fausto-Sterling’s article, we see the medical manipulation of gender freedom with newborn babies- are they not free to live life as a hermaphrodite should they be born as one? Closed-minded doctors and family should not be “free” to choose what sex and gender their child will have just because is not the cultural norm. What about the cultural “gender limits” mentioned by Butler, that constrain society so tightly that we are forced to choose one gender out of two with no freedom to explore? I see freedom as not only the right to choose and act in the way that best suits one’s gender identity, but to also have that choice be recognized as valid without having to actively struggle to maintain it. Only when our society learns to accept the varied nature of gender will all genders gain the absolute freedom to stop fighting for the validity of their identities.
