“Penn Plays Safe” Does it Right

Since last year during NSO, my roommate and I have been collecting the Office of Alcohol & Other Drug Program Initiatives’ Penn Plays Safe posters. Although they are the butt of many students’ jokes, I would like to applaud this campaign. With the issue of gender at mind, the poster series does a great job avoiding some blatant gender stereotypes that they could exploit. A over-confident manly man going too hard with beer pong or a vulnerable little freshman girl drinking too much of the jungle juice could have easily been used (and could have even been relatable and effective). The lack of pronouns, gendered images, and stereotyped situations seems to be intentional and with the perspective of this course in mind, it makes the entire campaign more universal to the entire campus of all sexes, genders, and orientations.
