Humor Masking Gender Roles

Last weekend I attended the Comedy Night where different groups at Penn preformed in order to help raise money for the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. One of the closing acts was an act with Bloomers and Mask & Wig, and the entire act was them poking fun at gender roles. The girls on stage talked in deep voices about Chipotle and getting some action while the boys on stage talked in OMG language about Sweet Green and clothes. While the actors were clearly making fun of gender roles, does this help people see that they are ridiculous or does it just reinforce them further? By clouding the real issues regadring gender roles with extremities and laughter the issues become illegitimate. Gender roles are never going to change if people don’t see them as a serious problem.
